Quoted from Laurence J. Peter, US educator & writer (1919 – 1988), one must wonder if he somehow anticipated our current healthcare system. We are living in an age where it is deemed ok to suggest prescription drugs on TV which can cure all of your woes, despite all of those nasty side effects, which don’t appear to be really significant anyway as the girl on TV is throwing rose petals during the part about the side affects. In light of this “better living through chemistry” attitude, we have never been more unhealthy as a country. Type II diabetes, solely a result of poor diet and lack of exercise, is now the norm. It will be endemic with the next generation of adults, many of who suffer with the affliction now as adolescents. Many of these same children who already suffer with ADD and other behavioral disorders attributable to a poor diet and lack of exercise, will be given drugs to quiet them down rather than treat the underlying problems. In my office, I see many, many adult patients, who come to see me for dizziness and imbalance, and on examination I find that they have been prescribed vestibular suppressant drugs, known to have no beneficial effect on balance or dizziness, and in fact, known to cause dizziness, lethargy, and imbalance. It seems that drugs have become the illogical alternative to taking care of ones self and that the latter has been ironically labeled "alternative therapy". Exactly when did this happen, and more importantly, how has this happened? Well, there is no question that by and large our culture is much more sedentary than any of our ancestors. And the TV, with its ability to brainwash anyone who sits before it that what you see must be true, after all, it’s on TV, right? At some point, logic must prevail if we are to avoid the many traps set to rob us of our health. And this logic must be from within ourselves. Individuals must learn to scrutinize decisions made regarding their health management, (which has never been easier since the Internet), and stand up to those that do not pass the common sense test.

I am asked this question a lot as we have found that this is the best way to describe what it is that we do. In essence, it is exactly what it is. Functional medicine pertains to restoring optimal function to a body part or system. Integrative, refers to the integration of as many therapeutic possibilities as are required to appropriately treat an individual. And neurology, obviously, is the practice of medicine specific to the brain and the neuraxis, (the entire nervous system). In my office, we treat patients with neurologic disorders without the use of drugs or surgery. This is a very difficult concept to comprehend by most, because as a society, we have come to accept that the only way to treat illness is with the use of drugs and surgery. This is hardly the case. It’s unfortunate that so many people are convinced, through advertising, that the best answer to a commonplace problem is a radical and toxic solution as the first course of action. In fact, many of the things that I treat patients for respond better without drug therapies, which actually often complicate matters sooner than fix them. Vertigo, dizziness, dysequilibrium and dystonia are a few of these types of conditions. This is also coincidentally the focus of my practice. Our office provides effective treatment strategies based on contemporary principles of applied neuroscience and the individuality of each patient. I am fully trained to evaluate the functional state of each patient’s neurological system, as well as to appropriately determine specific and individualized neurological applications of treatment through non-invasive procedures. As such, these procedures are uniquely designed to promote directed changes within the brain and nervous system. Using these types of brain based directed treatments, we are afforded a greater understanding of the neurologic spectrum of disorders with an opportunity and an ability to serve the many patients who suffer with these afflictions.

Obesity has become one of the most prevalent medical conditions affecting the US population. The American Obesity Association reports that over 60% of the adult population can be classified as obese. Besides the risks for medical conditions such as high blood pressure, colon cancer and coronary heart disease, back pain is another area that has greatly impacted those who suffer from obesity. The medical conditions that result in back pain that are the most common risks are degenerative disc disease, disc rupture or herniation, and spondylolisthesis or slippage of the lower back. Other risks for obese back pain sufferers are spinal stenosis, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.

The spine carries the body’s weight and disperses the weight that we encounter during our daily activities and rest periods. When we carry excess weight due to obesity, the spine absorbs the additional burden. This can lead to damage or structurally compromise the ability of the spine to do its job. Our lower back is the most sensitive to the effects of an overweight condition. The muscles in the lumbar spine region that support the back, thighs and pelvis can become weak and inflexible due to inadequate amounts of exercise and lessened mobility that frequently occur with obesity. With weakened muscles, the possibility of curvature of the spine increases dramatically in the lower back region. The result is poor posture and additional pain, as well as further affecting whatever medical condition the person is experiencing.

A sedentary lifestyle combined with an unbalanced diet can diminish the strength or density of our bones, leading to osteoporosis. The risk of fractures occurs when the actual design of the spinal column has been endangered by the weakened density of the bone structure. Fractures of the vertebrae are not a pleasant experience causing excruciating pain.

Osteoarthritis can be a result of excessive body weight causing a disproportionate amount of pressure and stress on the facet joints in the spine. Unhealthy posture may result in neck and back pain. The spine requires good posture and appropriate physical activity to provide the needed support to keep the spine healthy.

When you are obese, exercising is very difficult. It takes time to get to a level of activity that allows you breath well and not tire as quickly. If you are already experiencing back pain or other pains, exercising is even more difficult because of the very fact that you are exercising. Your body, muscles and joints are not accustomed to the activity and it is readily apparent in the additional pain that you experience. As much as the pain is too much to bear while beginning to exercise, the long term result of not exercising will be more pain that will only become more intense. Start slowly with gentle exercises that stimulate healing by allowing nutrients to flow to the spine. Every little bit of activity that the muscles and joints experience will condition them and strengthen them, so that it becomes easier and less painful over time.

When you add a healthy diet to your exercise program, you are providing additional assistance to your body to help it heal itself. Appropriate vitamins and nutrients are essential to better health. Balance is important, so consult with your doctor or other health care provider to ensure that you get the best results.

Obesity and pain feed off of each other. Once the pain starts, activity decreases so as to not aggravate the pain. The lessened activity results in a more sedentary lifestyle which promotes weight increase. As weight increases, more medical problems occur, bringing with it more pain. Experiencing more pain encourages less activity… It spirals out of control and simply does not stop – unless you take action by exercising and eating healthy.

Back pain is a complaint doctors hear about frequently. People want information on backaches. They want doctors to treat pain in the back. Many want to know the causes of pain in the lower right back.

Information about the Lower Right Back

It is important to understand the structure of the lower right back if we are to understand what causes pain there.

Your back, with its spinal column of vertebrae, connecting ligaments, tendons, large muscles, and nerves, is designed to be incredibly strong and flexible. Yet things can go wrong with this awesome structure.

* Muscles can be strained
* Ligaments can be torn
* Joints can be injured
* Bones can be fractured
* Nerves can be irritated
* Discs can be herniated
* Stress can tighten back structure

The lower back seems especially susceptible to injury, since it bears the weight of the torso, and makes more movement than the upper back. Its constant work can cause parts to break down and wear out over the years.

The lower right back has soft tissues that can be involved in pain. Those large, complex muscle groups that support your spine and help you move can be strained by improper lifting or posture. In fact, muscle strain is the most common cause of lower back pain. Twisting or pulling one of the following muscles can produce pain in the lower right back.

* Extensor muscles: These paired muscles in the lower back and gluteus help support your spine. If the one on the lower right back is injured, it will be painful.
* Flexor muscles: Attached to the spine’s front, these muscles help you flex, bend forward, and lift things. Again, injury to the right flexor muscle can cause lower right back pain.
* Oblique muscles: This muscle group is attached to the sides of the spine. The oblique muscles help your spine rotate, and give you good posture.

In addition to simple muscle strain, injury to ligaments, joints, and bones can also cause muscle pain. If one of these structures is injured or inflamed, back muscles can go into spasm, drastically limiting your movement and cause pain in the lower right back.

Stress is a common cause of pain in the lower right back. Stress will make your back muscles tighten. This happens to every muscle in the body, as we move into a “fight or flight” response. Muscles that are tightened lack the energy they need to support the spine. If the stress is frequent, and measures are not taken immediately to relieve it, lower right back pain can easily develop.

Information on Chronic Lower Right Back Pain

If lower right back pain lasts more than two weeks, you are likely to stop using the aching muscles in order to protect yourself from that pain. With disuse, the muscles can waste (atrophy) and weaken. This will increase the pain, since your muscles are less able to support your spine. If you increase your protection, and continue to avoid using the muscles, the cycle will continue, with the pain worsening at each turn. Chronic lower right back pain will result. This is why doctors urge patients with lower right back pain to exercise daily.

Information about Lower Right back pain Symptoms

You need to understand the symptoms of your pain as well. It is difficult to treat pain without knowing clearly what and where the symptoms are. You will want to gain a sense of exactly where your lower right back hurts. Is the pain focused in one small area, or does it spread throughout the lower right back? Is it confined to the lower right back or does it radiate into other parts of the body? Here are two major kinds of pain in the lower right back.

Lower Right Back Pain Symptom #1

Is yours a deep, aching, dull, or burning pain? Does it travel down your leg? If so, your lower right back pain may be chronic back pain.

Lower Right Back Pain Symptom #2

Perhaps yours is a very sharp pain, deep in the lower right back. This symptom may be the result of a back injury.

Information on Relieving Lower Right Back Pain

My personal physician assures me that the best relief for lower right back pain is usually exercise. Gentle exercises, performed daily with warm-up and cool-down, will strengthen the core muscles around the lower back area, relieving the pain and making them less susceptible to future injury.

CAUTION: Pain in the lower right back may also be caused by kidney stones or other non-muscular problems. Be sure to ask your health care provider for advice on any back pain.

Fibromyalgia is a term that is used to diagnose individuals who suffer from chronic muscular irritation. Individuals who suffer from fibromyalgia experience very tender muscular points that cause intense pain. There are other symptoms as well that they suffer such as, extreme fatigue, irritable bowl syndrome, headaches, insomnia, and depression. Fibromyalgia can be debilitating to those who suffer from it. The onset of fibromyalgia is often seen in individuals who have gone through an extreme emotional or physical trauma. It appears that those who have been diagnosed with this disease also do not enter into deep sleep cycles and when this happens, the muscles do not have a chance to rest and recover properly. Back pain is increased when a person does not get adequate rest. Individuals who experience this disease may also suffer from other forms of muscle problems such as tendonitis, bursitis, muscle strain, cramping, and spasms.

Along with the many symptoms of fibromyalgia, back pain is often a primary complaint among those who suffer with the disease. Whether the pain is in the upper or lower portion of the back, there is extreme discomfort. Many times, it is impossible to sit or stand for extended periods. Here are some methods of back pain relief for those who suffer from fibromyalgia.

Heat is an exceptional therapy for the majority of muscle aches and pains, and it works especially well for the upper and lower back. Heat works to loosen up the muscles and stimulate circulation, allowing your body to heal itself. Different types of heat therapies include:

Heat wraps: Many heat wraps today are made to wrap around portions of your lower back or any section of your back that is in pain. They can be warmed in a microwave or in a sink of warm water. Many of these wraps are designed so that you can wear them during the night and up to eight hours.

Heating pad: These are great and simple to use. You can place them on the back of your chair or whatever surfaces you may be lying on. They are excellent at targeting specific areas of pain in your back.

Warm baths: Besides being a great stress reliever, they are excellent for relieving back pain associated with fibromyalgia.

Back supports are an excellent tool to help alleviate back pain (upper and lower). They are excellent if you have to sit for extended periods in front of a computer or desk. When purchasing a back support look for one that has a curve that will fit into the lower back region. It should have a high back that will ensure that your neck and shoulders are also in alignment and that it has an adjustable back (this way you can use it with a variety of different chairs).

You may want to consider exercises that are designed to eliminate (or at least minimize) back pain. Back exercises will help to strengthen your back muscles and helping to bring your spine into alignment. Be careful and only do these according to your level of comfort.

Curl up: Curls strengthen the abdominal and lower back muscles.

Upper body extension: These extensions strengthen the muscles in your upper back

Arm-leg Extension: This exercise will help keep your spine in alignment, which will relieve the pressure on your lower back.

Electric stimulation is effective pain relief for those suffering back pain from fibromyalgia. The electric stimulation is used to block the pain receptors that cause the nerves to become irritated. This micro-current stimulates healing to the area of tissue that is injured. It can also be used to charge the muscles to contract. If you want to try this method, find a practitioner who is licensed with this type of therapy treatment. You may want to look into alternative treatments for both your back pain and fibromyalgia. Many therapies available help to relieve muscle soreness while at the same time increasing circulation, which will enhance muscle repair. Always look for a qualified practitioner before beginning any type of alternative therapy treatments. Some other alternative treatments to consider include acupuncture, massage therapy, and hydrotherapy.

There are many forms of treatment available for those who suffer from back pain due to fibromyalgia. Always consult with your medical professional and they can help you on your journey to experiencing less pain in your life.

The reasons for back pain during pregnancy are understandable. Many revolutionary changes, mind level and physical, happen with the woman, during this period. Therefore, pain in the back during this time is a common compliant. More than 50% of the pregnant women suffer from it.

The main reason being, the extra weight of the baby which changes the center of gravity of the mother’s body causing back ache. Hormonal changes during the early part of the pregnancy other contributory factors for the back pain. The other characteristics of pregnancy such as loosening ligaments between the pelvic bones and joints in preparation for the birth of the baby and urinary infection also contribute to back pain.

You need to distinguish between back pain and severe back pain in a pregnant woman. If it is severe back pain, it may be a pointer to some other serious types of problems. This requires thorough investigation and treatment.

The cure for back pain during pregnancy lies not in medications but in exercising. Try to keep the right posture, avoid artificial strain, walk properly, maintain good body mechanics, avoid slouching, use a lumbar cushion or a pillow and do appropriate muscular exercises in consultation with your physician or physiotherapist. Most of the back pain problems are resolved thus.

Know and practice certain practical hints. Frequently change the sitting position and do avoid standing for long periods. You need to take proper rest and sleep adequately. Never wear high-heeled shoes. Use flat shoes only. High-heeled shoes create back pain, even in the normal course without pregnancy. To walk on those shoes in pregnancy is both dangerous and harmful.

Yoga is helpful and good at all times, for men and women of all ages. But during pregnancy its practice cannot be overemphasized. No doubt the regular practice of yoga will make the body of the pregnant woman healthy and strong. Still, the woman should consult a professional yoga teacher to know the safe and helpful asanas for her during the pregnancy. Many special maternity classes are conducted by the yoga professionals to teach yoga postures which are beneficial and easy to practice during pregnancy. Reportedly such exercises help in the process of normal delivery of the baby.

So, if you have back pain during pregnancy, do not consider it as a disease. Do consider it as a natural development, and try to meet it as a development in the natural course. Do not be stressed. Delivery is normal process of the creative force of the nature. So, there is nothing to worry as such about the back pain during pregnancy.
